Helping you process difficult experiences and move forward
Sometimes, distressing or traumatic experiences can continue to affect us long after the event has passed. You may experience unwanted memories, flashbacks, anxiety, physical sensations or strong emotional reactions without always understanding why.
EMDR Therapy offers a safe and structured way to process these experiences, helping to reduce the distress attached to them. As a counsellor and psychotherapist in Wigan, I will work alongside you at a pace that feels comfortable to you, always respecting your individual needs and autonomy.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a recognised form of psychotherapy that can help the brain process memories that may have become stuck following a traumatic, frightening or overwhelming experience.
Usually, our minds naturally process experiences over time. However, when something feels too distressing or overwhelming, the memory may not be fully processed. As a result, certain situations, sounds, feelings, or sensations can trigger the memory, making it feel as though the experience is happening again in the present.
EMDR Therapy uses bilateral stimulation, which may involve guided eye movements, alternating sounds or gentle tapping on either side of the body. This occurs while you focus on specific aspects of a memory. Over time, the memory can become less vivid and emotionally intense, allowing it to be stored in a more manageable way.
EMDR is best known for supporting people experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD. However, it may also help with difficulties connected to other distressing experiences.
EMDR Therapy may help with:
You do not need to have a diagnosis to explore whether EMDR could support you. Sometimes, you may simply recognise that something from your past continues to influence how you think, feel or respond today.
Before any memory processing begins, we will take time to explore what has brought you to therapy, the difficulties you are experiencing and what you would like to achieve. We will also develop strategies to help you feel grounded and supported during and between sessions.
You will remain aware and in control throughout the process. EMDR is not hypnosis, and you can pause or stop at any time. You will not necessarily need to describe every detail of an experience if you do not feel ready or able to do so.
During the processing stage, I may ask you to bring a particular memory, thought, image, emotion or physical sensation to mind while engaging in bilateral stimulation. We will regularly pause so that you can notice what is coming up for you.
Everyone’s experience of EMDR is different. The number of sessions required will depend on your needs, your history and the experiences you would like to work through. There is no expectation that you should move forward before you feel ready.
My approach is tailored toward you rather than expecting you to fit into one particular way of working. I provide a safe, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you can feel held, heard and understood.
As a trauma-informed counsellor and psychotherapist, I understand the importance of building trust before exploring difficult experiences. We will work collaboratively through shared decision-making, valuing your strengths, preferences and personal boundaries throughout the therapeutic process.
EMDR may be used as part of our work together or alongside counselling and psychotherapy, depending on what feels most appropriate for you. The focus will remain entirely on what you wish to bring and work through.
I provide EMDR Therapy, psychotherapy and one to one counselling for clients in Wigan and the surrounding areas. Sessions offer confidential time and space to explore what you are experiencing without judgement or pressure.
Taking the first step can feel difficult, particularly when you have carried something alone for a long time. Whatever has brought you here, we can begin by having a conversation and move forward at a pace that feels right for you.
